The Hunter-Central Coast regions are fast becoming NSW’s go-to adventure hotspots with local National Parks attracting 8.1 million visits in the 2024-25 financial year, up from five million in 2022.
This accounts for 12.4% of all national park visits across the state.
The region’s popularity is clear, with five of NSW’s 20 most popular parks located across the Hunter and Central Coast, including:
- Brisbane Water National Park
- Bouddi National Park
- Tomaree National Park
- Glenrock State Conservation Area
- Worimi Conversation Lands
Each of these parks recorded more than one million visits each and in 72% of cases, visitors said the park was the main reason for their trip.
The Minns Labor Government has invested almost $30 million to support growing visitation and protect our region’s natural assets, including upgrades to the Tomaree Coastal Walk, Bouddi Coastal Walk, Somersby Falls Picnic Area and Glenrock mountain bike trails.
More people than ever are choosing to explore NSW’s natural beauty with National Parks across the state recording a record 65.5 million visits in 2024-25 financial year, positioning the parks network as a major driver of economic activity, regional development and affordable outdoor recreation.
Visitation across NSW has grown strongly in recent years also, up 24 per cent since 2022, reflecting the growing appeal of nature-based experiences.
Minister for the Hunter, Yasmin Catley said:
“The Hunter has some of the most diverse natural landscapes in the state, from pristine beaches to rugged bushland, we have it all.
“These numbers cement our status as NSW’s must-visit adventure playground, something locals have long known and the world is now discovering.
“More people than ever are choosing to explore our natural wonders and these places not only showcase the best of our region but support tourism, local jobs and healthier communities while providing affordable ways for people to experience the great outdoors.”
Minister for the Central Coast, David Harris said:
“The stunning Central Coast is home to some of the most spectacular and wellloved national parks in NSW – including Brisbane Water and Bouddi which are in the State’s top 10 most visited parks - and it’s fantastic to see more people than ever enjoying these places.
“These parks are at the heart of our community - supporting local tourism and jobs, encouraging healthy lifestyles, and giving families affordable opportunities to get outdoors and connect with nature.”
